Veterinary Cardiology at LMU Munich

About the Cardiology Service

Prof. Gerhard Wess

The Veterinary Cardiology Service is part of the Small Animal Clinic of LMU Munich , one of the leading veterinary referral centers in Germany.

We focus on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases in dogs and cats, with particular emphasis on advanced imaging and interventional cardiology.

The English section of this website is specifically designed for referring veterinarians and international pet owners seeking advanced treatment options.

Clinical Focus

Our clinical work is centered on advanced cardiac procedures and referral cases.

  • Mitral valve repair using the V-Clamp TEER procedure
  • PDA closure
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • Balloon interventions for pulmonic and subaortic stenosis
  • Advanced echocardiography including 3D and transesophageal imaging

These procedures are performed in a dedicated interventional setting using modern imaging, including multiple transesophageal probes, CT, MRI and a specialized catheterization laboratory.

The Team

The Veterinary Cardiology Service is led by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wess, Diplomate ACVIM (Cardiology) and ECVIM-CA.

The team also includes Dr. Jana Friederich, Diplomate ACVIM (Cardiology), as well as several residents and doctoral researchers.

Our interdisciplinary approach involves close collaboration with specialists in surgery, anesthesia and intensive care, which is essential for advanced cardiac interventions.

Experience and Referral Focus

Interventional cardiology procedures such as mitral valve repair require extensive experience, specialized equipment and a coordinated team.

At LMU Munich, these procedures are performed within a structured referral system, allowing for detailed case evaluation, preoperative planning and follow-up care.

Referring veterinarians are encouraged to contact us directly for case discussion and preliminary assessment based on echocardiographic data.

Research and Development

In addition to clinical work, the cardiology service is actively involved in research, particularly in the fields of cardiomyopathies, advanced echocardiography and interventional techniques.

This combination of clinical and scientific expertise supports the continuous development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
